Yesterday, my wonderful daughter, the professor, sent me the following article in CNN Opinion by James Patterson that nails the issue of learning to read, and I heartily recommend it: “How to get your kid to be a fanatic reader.”
It should alert all parents to the hazards of leaving the teaching of reading up to schools, and remind all school people and librarians that children should be taught as if they are creators of knowledge rather than passive recipients.
A couple of months ago I wrote two articles about learning to read. One started with: “I learned I could read the summer before fifth grade.” The other listed four conditions that kept me from being illiterate, none of which had to do with being “taught” to read. Both articles prompted many great comments and testimonials. See the comments–and these comments.
